STARTING HEREFORD HERD
N.Z. FARMER’S METHODS IN BRITAIN DEALS CONDUCTED BY 'PHONE A hustling New Zealand farmer who buys cattle over the telephone has secured the champion Hereford from the Royal Show with which to start a herd in New Zealand. A Consignment of seven pedigree Hereford cattle, all prize-winners at leading British shows will be shipped to New Zealand this month. The cattle, all heifers, were bought by Mr J. C. Alexander, of Wanganui, who is on a visit to Britain.
He went to several shows, and was so impressed by the quality of the Hcrefords that he cabled his brother, Mr T. M. Alexander, suggesting that they should start a herd in New Zealand. The answer was, “Go ahead.” Mr Alexander got busy.
Over the phone he bought Halesend Countess from Mr L. P. Lord, chairman of the Austin Motor Company. A few days later the animal was made Royal Show champion. Also over the phone Mr Alexander bought Hazel 40th the Three Counties Show champion.
All the heifers are being mated with the best stock bulls in England before leaving for New Zealand.
