CAMPAIGN AGAINST FAULTY BRAKES
2089 VEHICLES TESTED IN FIRST WEEK (P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 28. The brakes of 2089 motor vehicles were tested in the first week of the Transport Department’s campaign against faulty brakes. This total is made up of 1309 private cars, 387 light trucks, 311 heavy trucks and 82 other vehicles. The check showed that 851 private cars and 238 light trucks could stop from 20 miles an hour within 25 feet and were classed as good; 399 private cars and 135 light trucks could stop within from 25 to 40 feet and were classed as fair; and 59 private cars and 14 light trucks which did not comply with the regulations were classed as poor. The regulations say a private car must be able to stop with the foot brake within 40ft and with the hand-brake within 70ft from 20 miles an hour. A higher standard of braking efficiency is required of heavy and passenger vehicles. The check showed that eight heavy trucks and five ether vehicles had poor brakes.
