Possible Levy On Ferry Passengers Between Tauranga And Mt. Maunganui
A levy on passengers travelling- by harbour ferry between Tauranga and Mount Maunganui may be instituted by the Tau. rang'a Harbour Board. At its monthly meeting- this week the beard set up a conimittee to meet the ferry company proprietors on the question,'
This was a matter of importance and, with the work to be done on Coronation Pier, he thought that a levy of ferry passengers would be justified, said the chairman (Mr J. D. Alach).
A report from the board’s executive committee recommended that the board appoint a special committee "to consider the matter of making a passenger toll on all terry vessels and to discuss the matter with the proprietors." In view of the work the board was doing, he thought there would bo no objection, Mr Alach said. He believed, he added, that the proprietors intended going before the Price Tribunal regarding the ferry fares. , , Mr W. I. Withy asked if Mr Alacn had any idea of what was likely to be a reasonable charge on the terries. Would tire number of passengers carried on the ferries influence the charge? Mr Alach considered that it would.
