The Belgian Senate, after a threeday debate, has approved a Bill for a referendum about the return of King Leopold, now living in Switzerland. The Bill was sponsored by the Social Christian Party, and the Roman Catholic Party to which the Prime Minister belongs. The voting was 109 in favour and 65 against. The Social Christian Party and the Liberals supported the Bill. The Socialists, Communists and six Liberals voted against it. The Bill will be discussed by the Lower House next month. King Leopold said last week that he was willing to abdicate if he obtained fewer than 55 per cent, of the votes in the referendum.
