Provincial Music Needs Help
Appeal To British Arts Council Leading provincial orchestras, such as the Halle, the Liverpool Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham, and the Yorkshire Symphony, are applying for increased grants from the A:ts Council and from municipalities. . Officials of the Halle Society point out that the Government, through the Arts Council, contribute £120,000 a year to the upkeep of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. They hold that grants to permanent provincial orchestras shou d be much increased if their standard is to be maintained. Mr T. E. Bean, th? geneial manager, stated: "If substantial aid is not forthcoming the Halle will have to go out of existence or accept a status palpably inferior to that of orchestras abroad."
