Tauranga Hospital Maintenance May Total £61,334

Estimates For 1949-50 Adopted

Expenditure £4OOO Above Last Year's Figure

The expenditure for the Tauranga Hospital was about £4OOO more than the estimate for the year, reported the secretory of the Tauranga Hospital Board (Mr G. D. Stuart) when presenting' the financial estimates for 1949-50 at a special meeting of the board.

The secretary explained that provisions accounted for approximately £SOO of this figure, and the item included £854 for vegetables and eggs supplied from the hospital garden and poultry run. The expenditure on fruit and vegetables from outside sources was £685 for the year. Surgery and dispensary items absorbed about £OOO of the deficit. the main item being drugs and dressings. The hospital had had occasion to use streptomycin, which was an expensive drug. Instrument replacements, X-ray films and the surgical boot department would be the main items under renewals. The domestic account was well overspent, but quantities of textiles had been coming to hand for replacement purposes. The cost of nurses' uniforms, shoes and stockings also came under this heading and under the employment regulations the board had to supply nurses with two pairs of shoes and'six pairs of stockings annually and provide uniforms. Heat and light showed an increase and it was probable that consumption of coal would be a little higher with the operation of the new boiler house later in the year. The estimate for salaries and wages was not greatly at variance with the actual payments, but it would be necessary to provide for a higher figure for the coming year. It was probable that an additional engine driver would have to be employed for part of the year when die boiler house was in operation, provision was also made for a bacteriologist for eight months. This appointment would be contingent on ne space at present occupied by the.engineer being available for a moratory. The engineer, explained the secretary, should vacate the premises within the next week or so, and a start could then be made on renovating the building. •The grounds figure was lower SK - 11 ' 0 astimal "- but a credit of w 4 had been made to this account «* supplies to the hospital.
