Improving Waihi Road

Approach To Highways Board Chamber Of Commerce Discussion Criticism of the arterial roads leading into Tauranga was voiced by Mr C. Davey, a member of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, at the monthly meeting. Parts of Ihem were virtually one-way roads, he said, when proposing that strong representations be made to the Mam Highways Board to widen the roads. He mentioned the excellent state of roads in the north, alleging that the Bay of Plenty was neglected when the population figures were compared. Mr Davey moved that a letter be sent to the Main Hi'ghways Board drawing its attention, to the unsatisfactory state of the 'Waihi road which led into Tauranga. He also proposed that the local member of Parliament be written to with the object of invoking hi's aid in the matter. Mr E. S. Hylton asked if a reply had been received to the previous representations of the chamber. The president (Mr Dervan) pointed out that the old sealed road had been widenly slightly, so he suggested that they withhold complaint against it, but not of the Wai'hi road. Mr F. N. Christian supported the suggestion to confine their complaint to the Waihi road. He added that on a recent visit to the South Island he had been astonished with what they had to put up with there in the way of roads. Wi'thin a few miles of 'Dunedin, he said, there were still one-way traffic bridges on the main highway. He thought they should not be too querulous, because of that. Mr Christian said he had a different picture from that of Mr Davey of the northern roads. They were "disgraceful," he alleged. A motion was passed that Messrs Davey, Christian and the secretary (Mr A. E. Peppercorn) approach the Main Highways Board on the question of improvements to the road from Tauranga to Waihi.
