REPLACING FIRE TOWER
MT. MAUNGANUI BRIGADE’S REQUEST
FOUR NEW PLUGS TO BE PROVIDED
(Times Correspondent)
The secretary of the Mount Maunganui Volunteer Fire Board advised the council that the brigade’s tower was rapidly deteriorating and becoming unsafe, and that four additional fire plugs were needed in the southern part of the borough, in letter read at this week’s council meeting.
Stating that no provision had been made for repairs to the tower in the current year’s estimates the Mayor, Mr S. F. Newton, commented that only a few weeks yvould elapse before the estimate", for 1949 were considered. He thought the work might stand over till after that was done.
Cr A. E. Page, a member of the fire brigade, agreed that the work involved was not of extreme urgency and could be deferred for a few weeks. The council decided to allow for repairs in the estimates to be prepared next month. The need for additional fire plugs, however, was considered a F nH e which required immediate attention, and it was resolved that these be ordered and put in as soon as possible. The plugs are to be placed nt the Corner of Pitau Road and Grove Avenue and between Grove Avenue arid Terrace Avenue. A great number of houses have been built near this area of late it was pointed out, and the plugs >;re needed to provide reasonable fire protection.
