Good Year's Work At Apata

(Times Correspondent) The annual meeting of the Apata Women's Institute took place at the home of Mrs J, Blackburn of Apata. There was a very good attendance of members and two visitors irom Tauranga, Mrs McNaughton and Mrs Faulkner, were welcomed. 'A very complete and concise report was presented by the retiring secretary, Mrs K. S. Svenson. During the year many parcels were sent to England where chey were distributed to aged and sick persons. Card parties and sales tables were organised to raise funds for this purpose. Gifts were also sent to the Old People's Home in Te Puke and to the Tauranga Hospital, while a very generous response came from members and also non-members of the district when a request came for help for victims of the Gisborne floods. A substantial sum was raised by a special sales table for the Mayor-of Tauranga's appeal for the Cancer Research Fund. The Institute's Relief for Sick Mothers' Scheme continued to operate spontaneously and without friction, and members in hospital have been remembered with tokens ■ of flowers and periodicals. Keen interest had been shown in the garden competitions fostered by an occasional seed and plant exchange. The highest aggregate marks had been gained by Mrs Svenson. Home competitions for the year bad been very varied, and, on the whole, keenly contested. The highest aggregate marks had been gained in this section by Mrs Morrison.

Mrs E. McNaughton, Federation President, then spoke bri'efly, congratulating members on a very successful and busy year. She also showed a very interesting collection of calendars sent from Women's Institutes in England, each depicting rural scenes from the various counties.

The retiring President, Mrs R. Swaine, thanked Mrs McNaughton for her interesting talk, and presented - her and Mrs Faulkner with floral sprays. Flowers were also presented to the retiring president. Mrs R. Swaine, the retiring secretary, Mrs K. Svenson, and the retiring treasurer, Mrs S. R. Turner Mrs W. F. McClinchie was elected president and was presented with a bouquet. The secretaryship has

been divided between Mrs S. R. Turner (correspondence) and Mrs J. F. Steemson (minutes). Mrs H. Gilbert is treasurer for the next year.
