Amateur Cyclists At Hamilton
Tauranga District Entrants To Represent Waikato Champion Australian Riders Three cyclists from the Taurarm district, J. Higgins and I. SteS of the Mount Maunganui 'Arnafoil Athletic and Cycling Club, and 'A Polley of the Tauranga .Club hato been selected to'represent the’Wni kato Cycling Centre, at the NW' Zealand Hard Track Championship to be held at Wanganui on ■ sir urday. ’ &at " They were selected at an.Athletin and Cycling meeting conducted Hv the Hinemoa Sports Club at Ham i’lton for the Waikato Cycling Centre The track was, unfortunately o ri the dead side after rain earlier in the week. n The Australian Olympic and World cycling champions, S. Patter, son and K. Reynolds, were preseni at the meeting. The brilliant riding of Patterson was the outstanding feature. In the final of the special match race J. Higgins, of Mount Maunganui, who led from L. P a t. terson was overtaken by the latter in a brilliant sprint after he looked ,to be in a hopeless position. He finished half a length ahead 6f Higgins. Tauranga entrants’ successes were: —K. Herbert (Tauranga) second in half mile junior cycle; A Friis (Mount Maunganui) first in half mile senior, cycle, J. Higgins (Mount Maunganui) second, D. Gilliver second in two miie event. Miss P. Smith (Tauranga) first in ladies’.discus throw; G. Polley first in second heat of 1 Hinemoa match race, J. Higgins (Mount Maunganui) second fn fourth heat; semi-finals J. Higgins beat G. Polley, 16 l-ss; final, S. Patterson (Australia) beat J. Higgins 16 3-10 s; Waikato derby [ (5 miles), S. Patterson (Australia) jl, A. Anderson (Hamilton) 2, J, Rogerson (Hamilton) 3. Titne'srri 23 8-10 s.
Patterson, the Olympic rider* is classified as among the six best in the world and Reynolds is the Australian one mile champion.
