Uncommon Fish From Motiti A painted gurnard, a fish not often caught in New Zealand waters, was brought up in a haul of schnapper off Motiti Island on a recent night by the Tauranga fishing vessel Outlaw. Although closely resembling the common gurnet in shape, the fish was spotted wjth dark, brown and had two small bone “blades” protruding from the upper jaw.’ The painted gurnard is usually found in very deep water off the Australian coast.
