Awards have been made in the inter-High School Essay Competition for the Doidge Cup and accompanying prizes.
The Cup is competed for each year by pupils attending the four high schools in the Tauranga Electorate. The trophy goes to the school which produces the writer of the'best essay on an Empire subject. The writer of this essay also receive books to the value, of two quineas. The writers of the best essays from each of the other three schools receive prizes of books, as sectional winners.
The donor’s purpose in presenting these prizes is to encourage the teaching of history, and in particular to arouse an interest in Empire affairs and direct the attention of young people to the role to be played by the Empire in the international field.
The cup this year was won bv a pupil of the Katikati District High School, Lance McCarthy.
The successful section winners were; Lance McCarthy, Katikati District High School; Elaine Woods, Tauranga College; Donald Dunlop, Te Puke District High School; and Ross Dalziell, Waihi District High School.
