Both Jews And Arabs Are Opposed To Proposals For Future Of Palestine
LITTLE CHANCE OF SETTLEMENT BEFORE TRUCE ENDS
London, July 2. Reliable reports from the Middle East indicate that both Jews and Arabs are opposed to Count Bernadotte's proposals for the future of Palestine. Count Bernadotte himself is going to Cairo tomorrow to see the Arab leaders. He told a news conference at Jerusalem today that he would not ask for an extension of the truce because, before he asked for anything, he had to hear the opinions of both sides on his peace suggestions. He said he had heard the rumours but had had nothing official from the Jews or Arabs. A reliable source in Tel Aviv says the Jews are objecting to the proposals and that the United Nations mediator had asked them to accept in principal a smaller Jewish State than they proposed. A correspondent in a despatch from Cairo says that nobody there believed that it will be possible to reach any settlement before the truce ends next Friday. At Lake Success, the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Trygve Lie says that if no final settlement was reached by them, he hoped, for an extension of the truce, but it was up to Count Bernadotte to raise the matter with the Security Council.
