PRICES FOR BEER AND SPIRITS

INVESTIGATION BY TRIBUNAL

Public Inquiry To Be

Held

Sequel To Criticisms Of Commission

(P.A.) Wellington, April 22. Prices for b.eer and spirits will be investigated by the Price Investigation Tribunal at a public inquiry to be held soon. The inquiry will include investigation of the various measures used for the supply of beer and the availability of the 12oz "handle" of beer in both public and private hotel bars will be under review. Officers of the Price Investigation Division of the Department of Industries and Commerce have been preparing for a public inquiry en this subject since February. It was intended originally that the inquiry should be one of the first of the public hearings as laid down by the Control of Prices Act passed during last session. However, the great deal of preliminary work necessary resulted in the inquiry being ' postponed until after Easter. The inquiry has been prompted chiefly by the criticisms of the Royal Commission on Licensing in its reference to the control of liquor. No date has yet been fixed for the inquiry, but an official of the Price Investigation Tribunal today confirmed that a public investigation would be held. He estimated that the inquiry should be commenced in about one month.'
