INCREASE IN BASIC WAGE
POSSIBILITY IN AUSTRALIA Sydney, April 6. The basic wage is expected to be increased by 4s a week from May 1, according to the Canberra correspondent of the ■ Sunday Sun, who says that practically every Australian worker will benefit. This increase would change the basic wages in the principal Australian cities to the following amounts:—Sydney, £5 18s; Melbourne. £5 i?s; Hobart, £5 14s; Adelaide, £5 12s; Brisbane and Perth, £5 11s.
Such an increase would be the largest since the weekly interim increase of 7s granted by the Arbitration Court 15 months ago.
