PRESERVING THE HARBOUR

Sir,—For the edification of "Scout Idea" I would like to point out that in most parts of the tropics there are numerous infections to be contracted by bathing in sea water, l'hese to my knowledge affect ones eyes, nose, ears and stomach, which shows that sea water need not necessarily have any great purifying effect as claimed by your correspondent. Tropical waters are warm but not warmer than water in parts of our own harbour when the incoming tide flows over sandbanks and beaches made excessively hot by sunshine. This is particularly the case near the outlet of the Dairy Factory refuse pipe and at Hairini where the proposed (almost completed) drainage from the Roberts Street Milk Company's factory will take place, "in respect of the latter the Borough Council, Harbour Board and residents are complacently allowing a safe and popular bathing place to Become unusuable. I am, etc., "NO POLLUTION."
