RECORD KILLINGS LIKELY

LAMBS FOR EXPORT

Big- Increase On Previous

Season

Avoiding Congestion At

Works

(P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 16. Indications that this season’s killings of lambs may prove to be a record are contained in the latest figures issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers Board. The figures shew that from the beginning of the season on October 1 to January 10, lambs killed for export were 585,224 carcases more than the comparable period of last season. This total is made up of 327,924 carcases from the North Island and 257,300 from the South Island. Export killings of lambs in carcases for the season to January 10 were:— Oct. 1 - .1 an. 10 11)47-48 104(1-47 Non h Island .... 2.: 17(1,(1(111 2.1)48,(578 (South Island .... 093.245 333.1)43 Dominion total . 2,!)(i!»,847 2,384,(523 The average weights of carcases for tne two seasons compare as follows; Oct. 1 - .Jan. 10 11)47-48 11)1(5-47 Hi, Ih. The increased killings were extremely gratifying, both from the point of view of the aid to Britain campaign and the. necessity for early killings to avoid congestion at the freezing works during the peak period. The killing figures also were a pleasing indication of co-operation between the farmer, worker and the freezing industry.
