PAYMENT OF MAORI RATES

WHANGAREI COUNCIL'S

CONCERN

(P.A.) Whangarei, Jan. 16. "Instead of trying to collect a percentage of butter-fat payments for rates the council may have to collect n percentage of social security benefits," said the chairman, Mr J. Morrison, at a meeting of the Whangarei County Council today, when a letter was received from the Public Works Department suggesting that the council should undertake to maintain roads constructed by the Government to open native lands. It was decided to investigate the position of each road befcre taking any action. • Members of the council considered that the Maoris should pay rates similarly to Europeans. The policy of collecting a percentage of the butter-fat cheque for rates was not considered satisfactory, several speakers claiming that Maoris only milked cows until they had reared a large enough family to retire on family allowance. Mr H. A. Teal said that on the Mokan block the Maori Affairs Department farm supervisors were having difficulty in getting- the Maoris to farm their land on account of social security benefits and high wages.
