CONFIDENCE IN BRITAIN

COMMENT IN U.S.A.

Economic Stability By 1952

Importance Realised In

America

London, Jan. 14.

The American State Department has forecast that in Britain the rationing of food, clothing and petrol would almost certainly continue during and after the completion of the European recovery programme in June 1952. The State Department says that Britain's overseas payments might be balanced by that date. The importance of Britain's economic stability and world position was stressed, and the department declared that failure to restore that stability and position would have incalculable effects on the interests of the United States.

This was also emphasised by the United States Ambassador to Britain, Mr Lewis Douglas, when he gave evidence about the European recovery programme before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives. He stated that Communism would never get a hold in Britain and added that the British were a great body of people with long experience.
