OUT AND ABOUT

Town Planning Arrangements have been made by the Mayor of Upper Hutt (Mr E. W. Nicolaus) with Mr Clough WilliamsEllis, the noted British town planner, at present on a visit to the Dominion, to report on a town-planning scheme for Upper Hutt. Mr Wil-liams-Ellis will make a tour of the district by car on January 27, and on January 28 he will make a study of the area and its surroundings from the air. Novel Welding Torch An unusual fire occurred in a Wellington shop when a stay wire holding the overhead tram wires snapped. One end of the wire fell across the overhead wires, and the other on to the shop’s verandah making it “alive.” Where the wire hit the verandah roof it acted as a welding torch. It is estimated that over 2000 degrees were generated and an iron telegraph pole through the verandah roof was welded to the iron of the roof.

Canadian Bowlers

“We’re having a verra, verra guid time; quite beyond expectations,” said Mr W. W. Cross, the only representative from Victoria among the visiting Canadian bowlers. Forty years in Canada have brought little change in his Scottish form of address. The statement was made during the high light of the Canadians’ visit so far, a reception in their honour held at Stadacona, the residence of the High Commissioner for Canada, Mr A. Rive.

Dutch Minister Departs News of the impending departure of the Netherlands Minister (Dr. van Troostenburg de Bruyn) has created much surprise in diplomatic circles in Wellington. The Minister, who is acting under medical advice, will leave Auckland by air on January 16 for Holland, via the United States. The date of his return is indefinite. Dr., van Troostenburg dc Bruyn has not been in good health since his arrival in New Zealand last year.

No Food Poisoning No cases of food poisoning have been reported in Wellington this summer in spite of the unusually hot weather, the acting Medical Officer of Health (Dr. J. P. Kennedy) said recently. Dr. Kennedy added that although four adults believed to be suffering from paratyphoid “B,” a disease simulating food poisoning, had been admitted to hospital in Auckland, there was no cause for concern. Every year there were a few cases but they were usually confined to one area.

“Operation Deer Control” “Operation Deer Control,” the dropping of 32,0001 b of supplies to deer destruction parties, will commence on January 20 next, extending over the whole of the South Island. A C 47 aircraft of No. 41 Squadron, operating from Wigram, will do the dropping. The operation is being carried out by the R.N.Z.A.F. in co-operation with the deer control division of the Internal Affairs Department, and the Army is supplying a working party for the parachute and container packingwork.

Public Service Holidays Though the Public Service Commission declined, after strong representations from the New Zealand Public Service Association, to grant December 29 as one of the Christmas holidays, there has been no absenteeism in the service during the holiday period. A member of the Commission said that the Service is rarely troubled by absenteeism. “A large number of public servants take their annual leave during the Christmas period,” he said, “and for them December 29 was counted as part of their yearly holiday.”
