NEED FOR IMPORT CONTROL
EMPHASIS BY MINISTER ■ OF FINANCE CONSERVING DOLLAR CURRENCIES (P.A.) Wellington, July 31. "It is more necessary than ever to maintain the present system of licensing of all imports under present conditions of trade throughout the world," said the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) in reply to a question by Mr T. C. Webb (Opposition—Rodney) in the House of Representatives.
j/Lv Webb asked if it was proposed to exempt from an import licence goods in short supply here and not being • manufactured in sufficient quantity in the Dominion but available overseas.
Licences had been freely granted to import such good from the United Kingdom and other countries whose currency was based on sterling, added Mr Nash. If the goods were of an essential nature and not obtainable, from sterling sources, licences had been issued to import from other countries, but due regard had, of course, been taken of the need for conserving dollar and similar "hard" currencies.
