Mr Bevin, quoting' Britain's view on the Italian treaty to f 11 Paris conference stated bluntly that he did not agree ' v U +v,o view that had been expressed that the terms were witk W fie said:' "K the war had gone the other way and Mussolini a the other Axis Powers had won, I wonder how the countries had over-run would have faired. Would not their fate W been infinitely worse than that of Italy to-day?" Bevin went on: "The British Commonwealth and, we roudto say, Greece, had to defend, the Middle East alone T a long time and I would ask the conference to visualise 1 1 the war would have been if the Axis had seized the Suez I\\ Can the conference picture the position of Great a"Mil asking for the return of Malta or Aden, or what the Son of Egypt would have been? " On the question of Trieste Mr Bevin said the most importt aspect was that the area should bo in a position to serve aB umber of countries in south-eastern and middle Europe \ sides Yugoslavia and Italy. Britain had no particular strategical interest in Trieste atall.
