SWISS HELP FOR EUROPE

Tramloads of food guarded by picked Swiss units against plunderers will leave Switzerland shortly for Germany, Austria and Hungary under a Government-sponsored relief progi amine, says Reuters Berne correspondent.

There are about 1,000,000 children in Switzerland, and as a, gesture to starving Europe the Federal Council decided to help to feed the came number of children in Germany, Austria and Hungary for six weeks.

The Federal Council allocated 10,600 tons of food, mainly sugar chocolate/ condensed-milk, ’ vegetables, fats and tinned-meats for the programme and placed a credit of £900,000 at the disposal of the relief organisation.

Special delegates will keep ■ a rigorous watch that none of the feed disappears to the black market. Most of the food is going to the British zone of Germany.

Flying squads of mined German police and motorised platoons in the Ruhr will in future escort all potato trains through the Rurhr’s "hunger belt,” where mass attacks by looters have increased in number and violence. Latest incidents, in which more than 100 were arrested, include one at Mulhcim-Speldorf, where a track keeper trying to remove stones from the line was stoned by a crowd of 300 men, women and children, who then looted a potato train. Another crowd looting a train tired on the police, who returned tlio fire. At Gelsenkirchen two potato trains were raided by a huge ciowd. and looted. At Duisburg, 500 men. women ami children raided three potato trains and fought the civil, military and railway police.
