ECONOMIC UNITY FOll GERMANY London, May 21. “America is thinking of alternatives to the Potsdam plan of economic unity for Germany,” said the United States commander in Europe, General Joseph McNarney, to. the Press. One of these plans envisaged Germany remaining divided along the approximate lines of the present four zones. General McNarney, giving one of his most pessimistic reports so far on the four-Power administration, said economic conditions in Germany, particularly in the American zone, were difficult. “Unless we can reach a decision on treating Germany as an economic unit, there is no immediate prospect of checking the downward spiral of industrial production and the worsening situation,” he said. “No steps have been taken for pooling food for all the zones."
