WHAKAMARAMA NOTES

SCHOOL BREAK-UP CEREMONY (From Our Correspondent) A very enjoyable evening was held recently in the new school house at Whakamarama on the occasion of the annual hreak-np ceremony. A ‘concert presented by the children under the tuition of the teacher (Miss Johnston) was largely attended by parents and others and greatly appreciated by all. Some of the items were quite unique and earned well-deserved applause. Great credit is due to Miss Johnston and the children for the splendid entertainment provided. A dainty supper added to a very enjoyable evening, at the conclusion of which Mr L. Hearfield (chairman) thanked all for their interest and attendance. Finished Cutting It is reported on excellent authority that the local mill has finished cutting, and that the few remaining logs will be shipped to Auckland. This marks the end of an almost continuous run of about thirty years. It is not expected That the logging operations will last very long as limber is now scattered and hard to get out. Rain Needed While not actually dry, the district is in need of a good fall of rain. Hay cuts are generally light and unless sufficient rain fails soon there will be no rough winter feed as grasslands are already very short for this time of the year. There has been an almost continuous run of strong westerly winds for some weeks and growing crops and grass lands alike have suffered.
