HIGH TEMPERATURES EXPERIENCED HAYMAKING OPERATIONS The weather has_ been very hot, with a light sprinkling of rain. Good progress is being made with haymaking and some line stacks are to be seen in the district. RED CROSS SOCIETY At a well-attended meeting of the Voluntary Aid section of the Red Cross Society, Nurse Hatch officially opened the new rooms the branch occupies, next to Mr Johnston’s shop. Matron McDowell of the local hospital was the guest of honour and during the afternoon presentations were,made to Mrs Marshall and Mrs Macers, who are leaving the district. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded Dr. Bernstein and Mr H. McConnell, the secretary, who has done so much to help the section. The function concluded with Auld Lang Syne. Members of the V.A.D. are only too whiling at any time to help in case of accidents, etc. BREAK-UP CEREMONY The scholars of Mrs Batkins Sunday School, the “Cheerful Chirpers” held their break-up ceremony in the Aongatete Hall last Sunday afternoon when there was a good attendance. Canon Kayll expressed seasonal greetings to one an dall. TEACHER HONOURED At a large gathering of teachers parents and members of the School Committee held at the School on Thursday afternoon occasion was taken to farewell Mr E. T. Marshall, who has been teaching here for eight years and has been promoted to Gisborne. The headmaster (Mr Bayliss) spoke in high terms of Mr Marshall’s ability and tact. The reports of the visiting inspectors also bore this out and he was also a friend of the boys. He was sorry to lose Mr Marshall. Mr G. W. Rapley, chairman of the school committee, said of Mr Marshall they had had a teacher who was second to none. He also referred to the good work done by him in the Home Guard and Progress League. Complimentary remarks were also made by W. Nottingham (prefect), Aircraftman Sharp and Eric Booth for the old boys and girls. On behalf of the parents and children, Mr Bayliss presented Mr Marshall with a cheque. In reply, Mr Marshall said he loved the school and the district, and had enjoyed his term of eight years Very much. He deeply appreciated the loyalty of the parents and the co-operatio nof the different headmasters and staff. On the previous day, the High School girls had .presented Mrs Marshall with a beautiful token of esteem in connection with her muchappreciated work for the junior Red Cross Society. High School Ceremony The annual break-up social in

connection with the High School was overcrowded, but a very happy time was spent in games, playettes, songs, monologues and musical items. Durin gthe evening Miss Alison Rapley, on behalf of the High School scholars presented Mr and Mrs Marshall wit ha beautiful bouquet, reading lamp and cushion, for which Mi Marshall returned thanks. Presbyterian Sunday School The Presbyterian Sunday School and “Busy Bees” held their closing function on Friday evening, when there was a large attendance of parents, teachers and friends. The Rev. W. T. Brabyn presented the prizes, and expressed thanks to all who had helped during the year. A very happy evening was spent in games and an impromptu concert was held. During the evening the leaders of the “Busy Bees,” Mrs Brabyn and Mrs Bull were presented with lovely bouquets, and Judith Malt presented Mrs Brabyn with a beautiful ornament as a parting gift from the “Bees” and wished her much happiness in her new home. Mrs Brabyn feelingly replied, and urged each member to “keep at it.” Summer Sports Last Saturday there was a good attendance at the tennis courts, croquet and bowling greens. Many surprises were recorded in the bowling club's competitions and an unusual occurrence was an eight scored on one head on the pairs competition.
