DEATHS OF THREE MAORIS

NGAITERANGI TRIBE'S LOSS Tangis at Matakana and Matapihi The death occurred at Matakana Island, on Friday, January 15, of Mrs J. Murray, a member of the Ngaiterangi Tribe. She was aged about 60. The tangi which lasted for about a week was attended by a large number of Maoris from the surrounding country districts. Maoris from Rotorua, North Auckland and Whakatane were also present. Mrs Murray was buried on Monday, January IS. She is survived by a husband, four daughters and one son.

The Ngaiterangi tribe lost another of its prominent members on Wednesday morning, when Mrs M. Kohu a highly-respected member of the tribe passed away. The tribal mournings which were held at Matakana Island, the late home pf Mrs Kohu, were well attended. She was buried on Sunday. Mrs Kohu, formerly Mrs Tawhaio, owned much land in the district including a large area of land now used for defence purposes. She leaves eight children of the first marriage. Another prominent figure that will be missed by Maoris of the district is that of Mrs T. Hiamoe, who died last Thursday night. Mrs Hiamoe was also a member of the Ngaiterangi. A tangi was held by the Matapihi Maoris.
