BIG ATTACK ON L’ORIENT

GERMAN U-BOAT BASE Two Raids On Same Day No Nazis Over Britain London, Jan. 24. Last night R.A.F. bombers made a big attack on the German submarine base at L’Orient. They went over only a few hours after the daylight raid by U.S. heavy bombers. The attack lasted only 20 minutes but in that short time a great weight of bombs fell on this, the enemy’s most-important submarine base. There is accommodation at L’Orient for 20 to 30 submarines and the Germans say that the U-boat shelters are bomb proof. It is true that the vessels are under 15 feet of reinforced concrete but at the same time there are plenty of vulnerable installations vital to the running of the base. L’Orient has now b.een bombed 50 times. Last night our four-engined bombers were over Western Germany but there are no details of operations. Three aircraft were lost in night operations. Britain had a raid-free night.
