BLITZ CONTINUES
MALTA'S GREAT STAND
Terrific Axis Attacks
Many Planes Shot Down
London. Oct. 15
The Axis blitz on Malta continues at high pressure. It is not clear what the enemy is actually attempting to do.
In some quarters it is thought that these sustained attacks indicate that important convoys are being despatched to reinforce Rommel. On the other hand the Axis may be trying to reduce Malta once and for all. Whatever the Axis forces are attempting they are not meeting with any great measure of success. Yesterday the defenders of Malta again struck at them in no uncertain manner. At least 23 more enemy planes were destroyed and this brings the total shot down over Malta in four days to SO certainties.
Large numbers of Axis aircraft have been badly damaged in addition
to those destroyed and it is highly probable that many of these failed to make the sea crossing to their base. Our losses were five Spitfires but the pilots of three of these are safe.
