LETTER TO THE EDITOR
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF Sir, —History repeats itself. Some thousand years' ago Ethelred. the Unready, tried to buy off the Danes from raiding and robbing his country by bribing their leaders, with what result history records. Why should the raiders be satisfied with a portion when they could, and did, take all?
To-day Peter, :he Unready, follows the lead of Ethelred in the endeavour to pacify the militant unions. Their leaders he appoints to the Legislative Council, to commissions innumerable, as building supervisors, etc., while to the rank and file he distributes largesse in the form of war bonus on wages, coal bonus, sugar bonus, etc., but still they cry for more. Why should they be satisfied with part when they can, and will, take all? —I am, etc., “HISTORICUS.”
