VISIT TO BRITAIN
GENERAL SMUTS Convinced of Victory South Africa’s Gratitude London, Oct .14. General Smuts, who arrived in Britain yesterday, was received today by the King at Buckingham Palace where he had lunch with His Majesty. The General has already attended two meetings of the War Cabinet since his arrival. On his recent journey from South Africa, which was made by plane, the General reached Britain two days earlier than was expected. His plane when it arrived was escorted by fighters. In spite of his 72 years the General looked fit and well. He took a special train to London where he was met by Mr Churchill who gieeted him warmly. General Smuts came to London during the last war in 1917.
He said he had come to discuss the w ar situation. ‘‘l am convinced, said General Smuts, “that with resolute action victory should he ours. A stage in the war has now been reached when we must make a careful review of the course of action which Ave are to follow.”
The General said that South Africa’s gratitude to Britain Avas inexpressibly deep. For tAvo years Britain had stood alone and iioav Avith the help of Russia and of America a new' phase had been reached in w'hich we wmuld pass from the defensive to the offensive. Careful planning w r as needed of operations which Avould determine the outcome of the war.
