Opening of Season

Many Visitors Attend

Excellent weather was experienced for the official opening of :h.e Mount Maunganui Rowling Club's 1942-43 season. There was a very large attendance of bowlers, and several lady visitors. Refreshments were provided by the president and the ladies.

Among the guests were the Hon. B. C. Robbins, M.L.C., Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P., and Mrs Doidge, and many lady visitors from Tauranga, Te Puke and Rotorua.

The dispensing of afternoon tea was carried out by the local ladies under the very capable direction of Mrs Fergusson and Miss N. Walker, while Mrs Harold Clarke gave valuable assistance in providing boiling water.

Mr J. E. Alexander, president of the Mount Maunganui Club, extended a very cordial welcome to .the visitors, and wished them an enjoyable afternoon. He expressed his appreciation of the presence of so many representatives of neighbouring clubs and thanked Messrs. W. King and H. E. Philip, with their loyal band of helpers, for the work they had done in improving the green and its environments. He added a special word of praise to those ladies who had painted the clubhouse in the early morning hours, The president then called on Mrs Grubb to throw the first jack and declared the season open.

Several rinks from Tauranga and Tauranga South clubs, Te Puke, Mt. Maunganui, and players from Dunedin, Putaruru, St. Heliers and Rotorua, making a total of 62 In all, took part in matches, which resulted as follows:

TAURANGA CLUB SATURDAY'S GAMES A smaller number of bowlers were seen in action on the Tauranga Bowling Club's greens on Saturday, as several of the members were at the openings of the Katikati and Mount Maunganui Bowling Clubs. The day was ideal for the bowlers and some keen games were witnessed. The following are the results of the games played: Fendall, McFarlane, Fairway 21 v. Guillard, Bryan, Tamblyn 13.
