The following is a summary of the latest new news: BURMA On the Sittang front '10)0 miles south-east of Yenaiigyaung, Chinese troops are fighting strong Japanese forces 15» miles south of Mandalay. On the Siamese border reinforced Japanese troops are exerting heavy pressure on the Chinese in the Bawlake-Loikaw area. PAN AY The defenders of the island of Panay in the Philippines have withdrawn from two positions near Antique. NEW GUINEA The Japanese have made another and ineffectual raid on < Port Moresby. U.S.A. Dr van Mook has called on President Roosevelt at the W lute House. The former I jeutenantGovernor of the Dutch East Indies is on his way to London. The fourth meeting of the Pacific War Council took place at the White House to-day. Mr T V Soong, Chinese representative, said,' "We heard a report from Mr Hopkins and everyone seemed more cheerful." Viscount Halifax and Dr. H. C. Evatt both said that the meeting was very satisfactory. Mr Cordell Hull, U.S. Secretary of State, said in Washingtow to-day that United States relations with the Vichy Government were on a day-to-day basis.
