Maternity Hospital

It was considered that the question of the maternity hospital should be brought before the Minister. It was pointed out by Mr McNaughton that the expenditure of £14,000 at the present time was unwarranted. The chairman said he was in full sympathy with the proposal for establishing the maternity hospital but at the present time it was impossible.

Mrs Faulkner: The necessity for the maternity hospital is still present.

Mr Given said every detail of the cost for services should be placed before the Minister.

Superintendent's Report

In presenting his report for March the superintendent referred to emergency alternatives in heating and pointed out that there were several gas points that were not now in use owing to the introduction of electric power for lighting and heating. As an alternative to electricity, gas was invaluable and he was concerned with the possibility of the Gas Company going oat of business as a matter of first importance to the hospital. The chairman said he agreed that the .board should consider some form of subsidy to assist in keeping an essential industry operating. The local committee was authorised to go into tho matter and see what could be done.

w Dr. Mark reported, that the press-' ure of work was becoming very heavy owing to the extra responsibility thrown on the medical profession due largely to the passing of Dr. J. B. Mac Diarmid. He would not like to say what the position would be if Dr. White were called up for service. Dr. White was most anxious to get away. This was quite natural and he did not wish to stand in his way. However, the position must be faced. In the absence of any relief, the position would be quite impossible. Military req;r.JOinents had also added much lo the staff work. Te Puke Hospital The report of Te Puke hospital was received and the tar-sealing of main entrance from the road to the hospital was regarded as an urgent work for which tenders were received. That of Messrs Kirkby for £144 was accepted. Mr Eccleton said the sealing would do away with the dust nuisance which was a serious problem for the hospital. Katikati E.P.S.

Mr Cooper reported that the supplies for the E.P.S. at Katikati were inadequate. The chairman said there were difficulties in getting supplies for ordinary hospital requirements. The secretary, Mr Lumley, said, the board had to foot the bill for emergency hospitals, but not for emergency dressing stations. Assistance for dressing stations could be obtained from the E.P.S. The secretary's report was received.

Vegetables for Hospital

Much time was devoted to the question of supplies of \-egetables to the hospital from the hospital garden. The chairman remarked that there was plenty of land that could be cultivated but more plant was required and a horse cultivation was needed in order that larger quantities of vegetables might be grown. Mr Given suggested that the former members of the board might be able to advise the board of the ways and means to ensure that a good supply of fresh vegetables lie kept up to the kitchen. Gifts to Hospital Th. 3 matron reported that thanks were due to the following for donations to the hospital: Fruit —Mrs October, Miss Tanner, Messrs Robins, Davoren. Mushrooms—Mrs W. Armstrong. R.
