PLEA FOR CLOSER UNDERSTANDING

EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONSSCHEME THE BOROUGH AND THE COUNTY A plea for a closer understanding between the Emergency Precaution Committees acting in various parts of the district was voiced by Mr J. R. Chambers, secretary to the Tauranga committee, at a meeting on

Tuesday ai'ternoon, and certain steps !to bring this about were decided upon. Mr Chambers stated that he had attended a meeting of the Te Puke Committee prior to the Christmas ! holidays. It appeared that there was no co-operation between the Tauranga and the Te Puke committees and this was definitely wrong. One committee had to know what the other committee was doing. It would be realised that in the first place, this organisation was set up lor the Tauranga Borough only. The committee then undertook to cover the county area and the Te Puke borough in its scheme. A conference should have been arranged at the outset, and the matter thrashed out then. Most of the committees working were for the Tauranga district only, but it must .organise to cover the whole district. The Te Puke Committee asked how far it was to organise, and it came clown to this —the only way to get co-ordination was for the chairman and deputy-chairman of each committee to confer with the Te Puke Committees. This Ava,s the only way to get down to a sound working basis. Should an emergency arise this committee must know what Te Puke was doing and visa versa.

Mr S. W. Gunion said he was very plea.sed Mr Chambers ha.d brought forward this question. Speaking as a county member, he l-elt that in Te Puke they were being- left rather "in the air." Mr Chambers had mentioned that, in the first place, this was a Tauranga Borough movement, and Mr Gunton said he still failed to see where. th,e connty came into the scheme. As a county representative he would like to know where the county came in. The chairman (Mr L. PL Wilkinson) reminded Ms" Gunton that together with the secretary. he had waited on the County Council at one of its meeting's, and that it had been arranged that each county member should form a committee in his riding. If, however, the county considered that it should have more representation on this committee, the committee would be pleased to have them.

Mr Gunton explained that .that was not the point at which he was driving. What he meant was that committees had been set up as arranged, but now the committees did not know what to do next. They had had no instructions.

Mr Chamber's remarked that there must be co-ordination with the committees. There was nothing else but that the committees get together as soon as possible and thrash the matter out.

The chairman said that this committee wished to work in with the county as much as possible, and he thought the time was now ripe for a full conference to be held between representatives from the County Council, Te Puke borough and this committee. If this were arranged co-operation would surely be reached.

Mr H. Lewis said that so far as the local authorities were concerned he thought this conference could be arranged. It was moved by Mr Lewi 13 and seconded by Mr Gunton thai a conference be arranged between the Tauranga and Te Puke boroughs, the Tauranga County and the Mount Maunganui Town Board after which a further conference should be held with the county riding wardens* west of Tauranga. and a further conference with the county riding wardens east of Tauranga and the Te Puke borough, the motion being carried.
