A PAGE FROM THE PAST News paragraphs from the Bay of Plenty Times of January 16, 1891, read as follows; — ' “About twenty of the Te Puke residents left for the lakes on Tuesday, where they intend spending about eight days, camping out, and seeing the wonders of the district. The party include Messrs Bouchers, Bennetts, Vercoes and Tanners. They have taken Air Archie Snodgrass’s waggon to carry tents, cooking utensils, etc. “We are sorry to hear that Mr Proud’s scutcher has broken down, but this will not stop the whole work of the mill, as the strippers are going full time, and a new scutcher is to arrive in Tauranga by next steamer. “The usual topic of conversation at Te Puke viz. maize and pig or pig and maize, has to give way for the present to horse racing, as there are about ten Gillies, Saints, etc. in training, whose owners are very sanguine.

“The Te Puke residents are in a great state of excitement about the new traction engine that is reported to be going to work on the road, between Tauranga and Te Puke. They say they will not be able to drive their buggies and cpnveyances to town, for fear of their horses taking fright at it, should they suddenly come upon it round one of the numerous bends in the road.

“We understand that a petition is being taken round, requesting the Union Company to make Tauranga a port of call. It is agreed on all hands that direct communication between the South and Tauranga, would go a long way towards the Hot Lakes Tourist traffic, the loss of which has been such a blow to our town and district.”
