BIG EARTHQUAKE

Sydney, Jan. 15. Rabaul (New Britain) residents rushed from their homes early yesterday morning when one of the severest earthquakes they have experienced, shook the town. Many people prepared to evacuate the town, but the chief road was completely blocked by landslides. A number of houses collapsed and damage to household goods was extensive. No casualties have been reported. Shocks continued with decreasing intensity throughout the day. r.', The Administrator of New Guinea telegraphed that landslides which began in the morning continued in the afternoon, when houses were collapsing at Kerevat, Toma and on the north coast of New Britain. Damage was severe on the Gazelle Peninsula, moderate at Kieta and slight at Wau.
