In the Bay of Plenty Times of Jan. 15, IS9I we read: “So far the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club has been doing very well in the matter of subscriptions, and a sum of about £BO has, we believe, been promised. There is every prospect of a good meeting on St. Patrick’s day. By the bye, the 17th March is the day on which the annual Athletic sports have hitherto been held here. If horse races are held on that date this year it will be necessary to alter the day for the sports. Athletic sports are held at Te Puke on Easter Monday, so we would suggest that the Tauranga Sports Committee make the Thursday before Easter Monday the day for their meeting. The reason of our suggesting this date is that the one course of training would do both for Tauranga and Te Puke.

“The cricket match between teams chosen by Messrs Forbes and Easton, postponed from last Thursday, will be played in the Domain on Thursday afternoon next, when the following players are requested to be on the ground punctually at 2p.m. Dr. Forbe’s team: —Major Boxwell, Rev. Lawry, Messrs Forbes, Thistlethwaite, G. Morris, P. Morris, R. S. Bush, J. Bush, Cooke, Parker and Darragh. Mr Easton’s team:—Messrs Easton, Roberts, Griffiths (2), Bonner, Clark, Baker, Haua, Horne and Harland.”
