FUNERAL SERVICE

LATE HON. C. E. MACMILLAN

The funeral of the late Hon. C. E. Macmillan took place yesterday afternoon. An impressive service was held in Holy Trinity Church, and later at the graveside by the Re\. H. Irving. In a short address Mr Irving referred to the long and faithful service rendered to the community by the deceased gentleman, and to his qualities as a friend. Mrs L. Cameron Smith at the organ played the hymns “Jesn Lover of My Soul,” ‘‘Lead Kindly Light,” “Nearer My God to 'lhee, and ‘‘Abide With Me,” before the service commenced, concluding with Coionach” (a Highland lament). The congregation joining in singing O God Our Help.” When the service was concluded Chopin s Funeial March was played as the casket left the Church.

There was a fully representative gathering of the late Mr Macmillan s lifelong friends wishing to pay their respects to a fellow citizen who had done so much to promote the interests of all in the district which he loved so much. The chief mourners were Airs C. E. Macmillan, Mr Latham Macmillan, and Miss Violet Macmillan; Miss L. Macmillan and Airs F. Johnston (sisters) and Mr F. Johnston: Mr Donild Macmillan (nephew) and Mrs D. Macmillan, of Katikati. The pall bearers were Messrs Roy Wallis, N. Blomquist, P. Lumley, W. P. Bell, H. J. Clarke and P. T. Ream. The Government was represented by the Hon. B. C. Robbins. The Hon. W. Lee Martin and Mrs Lee Martin, and Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P. were also present, other representative citizens being: His Worship the Mayor, Mr L. R. Wilkinson and Messrs D. Matheson, A. lies, H. W. F. King (Borough Council), Messrs S. W. Gunton, J. H. Evans, J. Alach, H. Bragg, E. Hughes and H. Lewis (County Council), L. Tollemache (A. and P. Association): D. C. Thomas and G. Sharp (Katikati Dairy Association) ; J. T. Eccleton and J. Brown (Te Puke Borough Council); A. E. Newsham and A. W. T. Hyde (Hospital Board); W. Tanner (Bay of Plenty Racing Club); Allen Smith (Tauranga Electric Power Board) ; A. Harrison and H. J. Angus (Farmers’ Union); Miss Stewart (Plunket Society): F. B. Hartstone (Tauranga Co-operative Dairy Assoication); Dr. Lawrence. Messrs J. Hepburn, N. Quirk and J. Summers (Te Aroha Racing Club) ; A. J. Mirrielees (Tauranga Golf Club) ; G. G. Norris (Tauranga Chamber of Commerce) ; S.’ Steele and R. Burke (South African War Veterans). Major and Mrs Scantlebury and Miss Ramage, Mrs H. Prime Minister’s Sympathy The following telegram was received yesterday by the Hon. B. C. Robbins: “The news of Mr Macmillan’s death was received with deep regret. Would you please represent the Government at the funeral. Would you also kindly arrange for a wreath with the following inscription ‘With deepest sympathy from the Prime Minister and his colleagues.’
