Lewis, County Clerk, in a special report stated: It will be noted by the number of property transfers before the meeting, that the demand for property in this County still continues. It naturally follows that there woqld not be any such influx if the Council had not done and was not continuing to follow out the policy of providing roads for transport, with the steady improvement of the maintenance of the by-roads radiating from the main roads. •In support of the advancement of the county in comparison with its neighbouring county as. a stock county, I submit the following enlightening statistics covering the periods 1891, 1911, and 1938: 1891, Tauranga.— 9174 sheep; 172 3 dairy cows; 6 240 other cattle; pigs nil. ' Whakatane. —28,0 22 sheep; 626 dairy cows; 3 954 other cattle; 995 pigs. 1911 Tauranga.—73 24 sheep; 8264 dairy cows; 19,662 other cattle; 4802 pigs. Whakatane. —34,586 sheep; 3909 dairy cows; 7 775 other cattle; 125 9 pigs. 1938. Tauranga.—9 6,5 9 4 sheep; 54,7 99 dairy cows; 38,171 other cattle; 25,180 pigs.
