DRINK AT DANCES

STRICTER CONTROL URGED Morrinsville, Aug. 16 In response to the requests made by country hall committees and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Mayor of Morrinsville, Mr W. Hetherington, will call a meeting shortly to consider concerted action by hall committees to deal with the problem of drinking outside dance halls.

At a meeting of representatives of the Tauhei, Tahuna, Kiwitahi, Motumaoho, Tatuanui and Mangateparu hall committees the subject of liquor at dance halls was discussed and the following recommendations were suggested: That hall committees prohibit the use of alcoholic liquors unless special permission is obtained; that the names of individuals or organisations infringing the by-law as above be circulated between hall committees and that the use of the halls be denied to such as are on the list; that halls be let with right to have a member of the committee present at the function; that legislation be pressed for along the above lines; that a halls association be formed.

“We know to our sorrow that in the Morrinsville district there have been several motor accidents due to persons taking liquor to dances,’’ said Mr Hetherington at a meeting this week. “I do not see what can be done to stop the trouble unless the support of the . Government can be obtained. The police have no authority to stop drinking in cars. I am sure we will have the co-opera-tion of the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, in securing any legislation in this direction.”
