CAMPING SITES

SPECIAL REPORT CONSIDERED BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO BE SUBMITTED TO BOROUGH COUNCIL A committee, comprising the chairman, Group-Captain F. E. Hewlett, Mr G. G. Norris and Air J. R. Chambers, presented to the Chamber of Commerce, at its meeting on Tuesday night, a report in regard to camp sites as follows:

The committee set up by the Executive examined the following sites: High School Reserve. Domain football ground, opposite Wharepai. Snow’s Camp. Jordan Park. Mr Alunro’s ground. Centennial Park. Miss Brain’s property.

The Committee submit the following observations and recommendations: —

1. In view of the’ sums that have been expended on advertising the attractions of Tauranga in order to attract visitors, it is essential that the motor camp capacity should be increased above ; the existing twenty sites before Christmas, 1939, even if temporary sites are allotted and equipped. 2. That a special letter be written by the Borough Council to the Minister, asking for a decision on the proposition already put forward by the Borough Council on the high school reserve land so that this can be equipped as a permanent camp this year. 3. if there is any hitch in achieving two above, that the permission of the Minister be obtained to the temporary use of the high school reserve as a camp pending further negotiations or alternatives.

4. That Mr Snow he allowed temporary overflow space on to Jordan Park up to' the maximum capacity that can be authorised by the Borough Inspector. 5, Failing two and three above, the special permission of the Minister should be obtained, for the establishment of a temporary camp at the domain football ground (opposite Wharepai Hotel), this camp to be evacuated before the'l94o football season.

6. Failing two, three and five above, negotiations to be commenced with a view to establishing a temporary camp on Miss Brain’s property at the intersection of* Devonport Road and Morris Street, for this season only.

7. Any structures or equipment used for any temporary sites could be transferred to the permanent motor camp as soon as this is available.

Mr Bieleski said it appeared that the high school reserve offered the best prospects as a camping area. Several members concurred. Mr G. G. Norris said Jordan Park was a popular place with the people.

The chairman moved —That the report be adopted and forwarded to the Borough Council. . The motion was seconded by Mr Peppercorn and carried. The Hon Mr Macmillan submitted particulars in regard to the Borough Council’s representations to the Minister of Education for-the acquisition of the high school reserve. Personally he favoured the acquisition of the whole area if it could be arranged. The council was still negotiating with the Minister. He stressed the need for an adequate camping area. .

Mr Chambers urged that some provision should be made as quickly as possible for a temporary camping ground. The acquisition of the high school area was a permanent measure.

Mr Peppercorn moved —That the matter, be further left a in the hands of the committee.—Seconded by Mr Briggs and carried.
