CABLE BROKEN
MIDWAY IN COOK STRAIT The Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, advises that a four-core cable, being part of the communication system betAveen the North and South Islands across-Cook Strait, has broken at a point estimated to be midway in Cook Strait. Mr Jones added that the Department Avas in communication with Cable and Wireless Ltd., with a view to obtaining the services of a cable repair vessel. It is likely, however,; that some months Avill elapse before the vessel can be made available and repairs effected. In the meantime the complement of telegraphic channels between the two Islands is not affected; hut the number of 101 l circuits for inter-island telephone communication has been reduced from ten to six. As a result it is probable that requests for inter-island telephone communication avIH ha subject to delay.
