A PAGE FROM THE PAST Tauranga 50 Years Ago The following account of a sporty meeting held at Te Puke on Easter Monday appeared in the Bay of Pj etl . ty Times of April -1. ISSS; “ The sports at Te Puke on Easter Monday drew together at that settlement a large number of visitors from the neighbouring districts, ang during the morning the Tauranga road presented quite a busy ap. pearance. The sports were held in Mr Lee’s paddock, and the attendance during the day must j, av . nuinhered between three and four hundred. The handicapping 0 £ the different races had been entrusted to Messrs Brady and Mead, and the closeness with which the events were contested testified to the care with which they had done their work Mr A. Snodgrass acted as starter! and Messrs J. C. Galbraith and a! Bird as judges, while Mr Whyte the" secretary, and Mr Tanner, his assistant, were busily engaged in taking entries and arranging the races! Shortly after 11 o’clock the first event was nut off, the last one late in the afternoon bringing to a dose the most successful sports meeting ever held on the coast. The follow! ing are the detailed results:— lott yards handicap, Te Puke men only, —J. Tanner 1, C. Vercoe 2; nine started. 120 yards handicap.— jp Tanner I, C. Vercoe 2, H. Daunt 3; six started. High Jump.—p. Vercoe, sft Dili, l; J. Bird. 2; Rakau. :i; seven competed. 440 yards hair dicap.—J. Bird 1, S. Tanner 2; nine started. Boys’ race, under 14, 100 yards.—TV. Vercoe 1; eight competed, 25 Oyards handicap.— F. Vercoe 1, Daunt 2. H. Tanner 3; eleven faced the start--. Long- Jump.—Rakau. a native. ...,s first, jumping 17R Sin: eight entries. 1 mile handicap —S. Tanner 1, J. Bird 2; live competed. Tilting at the Ring.—Won by a native, Koa. who look two rings in the lirst round: twenty-one competed. Tug-of-war—Tauranga team, Crosby, Bickers, liana. 11. Tanner, S. Tanner, J. Tanner, CL Musgrave, R. Dowell, H. Daunt. J. Martin, ami C. Tanner, 1; Te Puke team, 3, Horse Jump.— Botherem (0. Vercoe I was the only one that succeeded in clearing 3ft Sin., and therefore won the prize.”
