Tauranga 50 Years Ago

Tauranga householders wore apparently much disturbed fifty years ago about the removal of the schoolmaster, judging by this paragraph from the Bay of Plenty Times of January 26, 18SG, and other paragraphs and reports appearing about the same time: “Mrs James Bodell announces that she will canvas the Tauranga householders with a petition praying the Board of Education to reconsider its decision re the removal of Mr Maberly.” This item is from the same issue: “Notes By the Way.—Since last I contributed food for the intellectual cravings of your readers, another year has been snuffed out, and the candle of 18SG lighted. The flame in this district although not brilliant, yet points towards improvement, and gives strong indications of burning with increased splendour in the not tar distant future. The dark cloud of depression hanging so heavily over us, even now shows signs of lifting, and may possibly pass away altogether before many months have flown. The Railway has latterly taken a more hopeful turn, and is assuming something like definite shape. Much of the old mystery surrounding the project is removed, and has given place to a plain, straightforward, feasible scheme, which is shortly to be undertaken with every probability of success.”

Quite apparently a ‘depression’ is no modern idea.
