PAGE FROM THE PAST.

TAURANGA FIFTY YEARS AGO

The matter of permanent street levels in any town is of the first importance, and it is interesting to note, from the Bay of Plenty Times of April 20th, 1883, a reference to the fixing of those levels in Tauranga. The paragraph reads: — “The report of Mr J. Gwynneth, the consulting engineer appointed by the Council to determine the permanent levels (so far as they have been taken) has been laid before the Council. The following is an abstract from it:——‘Mr Gwynneth, after stating that the levels of the Strand have had his closest consideration bb to future drainage, existing properties, etc., he recommends that the height of the Strand between Spring Street' and Harington Street be fixed at 7 ft. above high water mark, rising to 9ft. at McLean Street, and at Monmouth Street to 25 feet; the highest point at Cameron road being at Hamilton street, which he recommends to be 50ft. above high water mark, the lowest points being Brown street (38ft.) and Elizabeth street (47ft.) respectively.’ The report is accompanied by a schedule and plans, showing the different heights at the intersections of every street reported on. These are now on view at the Council Chambers, and their adoption by the Council will be considered at the next meeting.
