SHOOTING FATALITY
WOMAN FALLS WITH GUN. Matamata, April 10 A shooting accident which occurred near Mathieson’a Bush, Buckland Road, Matamata, on Sunday afternoon, resulted in the death of Mr John Morley Fitness, aged 4S, of Matamata.
At about i o’clock Mr Fitness, his wife, his sister-in-law', Miss Zita Grvoes, and Mr B. Alberts were returning through a swamp from a shooting trip. It is stated that Mrs Fitness, who was carrying a shotgun, handed the gun to her sister, Miss Groves, and turned to speak to her husband. Miss Groves slipped and fell and the gun was discharged. The charge entered Mr Fitness’ hack, and death was instantaneous.
Mr Fitness was very well know t n in the Waikato, having been attached to the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, Limited for 20 years, and being Matamata agent for the firm for the past 13 years. He was horn at Pokeno, being a son of the late Mr and Mrs W. Fitness. He had no children.
At an inquest held to-day the coroner returned a verdict that death was caused by a shotgun being accidentally discharged by Miss Groves.
