BOWLING

Completion of Tournament

WIN FOR ONEHUNGA. The concluding rounds of the final between Onehunga and Tauranga No. 2 (Mantell) saw little advantage to Tauranga. On the eighteenth head Tauranga scored a single and Onehunga retaliated by scoring one on the nineteenth making the scores Onehunga 18, Tauranga 11. On the twentieth Lewis drew the shot with his second. Woollams with his second added another. Livingstone drove the shot howls off and left Onehunga three up. The game was then called off as Onehunga held a lead of eleven with one head to play. Cheers were given for the winners and the runners up. Following the completion of the match those present gathered in the pavilion where the President, Mr A. Bell congratulated the winners on their fine performance. The members of the team had all played splendid games and their combined play had made their side practically an unbeatable one. He then presented the skip, Mr Livingstone with the Pascoe Cup and a miniature cup to each member of the team. He also congratulated the Tauranga team on the fine fight that they put up, and stated he felt sure that everyone would agree that the better team won. The Tauranga team as runners-up were then presented with fountain pens. Mr Livingstone thanked Mr Bell for the praise he had. given his team. He said that he would have liked to see Tauranga win the tournament as his team were the winners last season. He congratulated Mr Mantell on the splendid game he played. Mr Livingstone then asked those present to show their appreciation of the strenuous efforts of the ladies in doing their part in promoting the successful tournament that had resulted and for the hospitatility shown to bowlers by them. Cheers were given for the ladies. Mr Mantell the Tauranga skip also thanked Mr Bell and Mr Livingstone for the many kind remarks they had made. His team had fought hard. Appreciation of the efforts of the Clubs green keeper in bringing the green to its present stage of perfection was shown by the bowlei's who, represented by Mr Livingstone, made a donation to Mr Pilcher. Mr Livingstone stated that though the Auckland greens were notorious for their keenness and good playing surface he had never played on a better green than that of Tauranga. And so the fourteenth Annual Tournament of the Tauranga Bowling Club is over but before it is forgotten special mention must be made of the splendid efforts of the President of the Club, Mr A. Bell, and his officers who worked heart and soul to promote a successful tournament, the Club Secretary, Mr Charles Whiting deserving special mention for it is due in no small measure to his untiring efforts that the Tauranga Bowling Club enjoys the success and popularity that it undoubtedly does.
