The European forwards attacked. One ot the Maoris was penalised for obstruction and C. Cameron landed a fine goal from forty yards out: Europeans, 8; Maoris, 5. Uninteresting play ensued for a period and then Grey followed the ball across but Rare forced. Ainsley made a nice opening an,d sent to Murray who bumped off several tacklers and passed to P. McLeod who crossed over, but was held up and could not touch down. After resuming Murray made a splendid run on the eastern flank and dummied past half-a-dozen men. Heke followed through and kicked across. P. Ririnui then gave chase and touched down. The kick failed: Maoris, 13; Europeans, 8. L. Murray went off in the second spell, and M. Tangitu took his place. The early stages of the second half were mainly between the forwards. The Maoris worked through in a loose rush and M. Tangitu scored. The kick failed to rise: Maoris, 16; Europeans, 8. W. McLeod came off and was replaced by W. Ngatai. The Maori forwards combined advantageously and pushed through to the Europeans’ line, the movement being stopped for a knock-on. The Maoris contiiu ued the attack and a handling bout saw I. Tangitu tackled near the line. The Maoris infringed and. R. Grey landed a goal from thirty yards out: Maoris, 16; Europeans, 11. Shortly after C. Cameron made an excellent opening and ran down the western side. He then passed to Gulley to Grey who ran through but was called back. The Europeans assailed strongly and Ferguson sent up a high ball which went well over the goal line. Olsen and Gardiner raced for the ball and Gardiner got there and kicked behind the dead line. Upon resuming the Maoris combined well, and a smart movement was finished off by Gardiner scoring. The kick was a poor attempt: Maoris, 19; Europeans, 11. The Maoris continued to hold the upper hand. Rare scored from ai passing run. I. Tangitu converted: Maoris, 24; Europeans, 11. The European backs started a passing run and Grey ran clear with only the full-back in front. The former passed out, but Rare intercepted and cleared with a kick to touch.
