LAWN TENNIS CLUB

Annual General Meeting MR R. H. PHELAN RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT. The annual general meeting of the Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club was held in the Borough Council Chambers last night. Present: Mesdames Bullard and Maltby; Misses Phelan, A. Goodyear, K. Turner, Whitworth, Humphreys, Mountfort, K.. Baker, C. Baker and Mirrielees: Messrs F. Baker, H. P. Butts, Laurenson. L. Green, C. Steedman. R. Mirrielees, R. H. Hay, K. Taylor, R. H. Phelan, E. T. Baker, R. T. Goulding, D. A. Ivory, H. P. Mountfort, and A. T. Buxton (hon. Secretary).—Mr Ivory, at the request of Mr Phelan, presided. Annual Report. The Committee presented the following report: The past season was most successful and gave evidence of an increased interest by the Club members. It is with a deep sense of loss that we have to report the death of Mi R. J. Phelan. We extend our deepest sympathy to our President. Mr Phelan, Mrs Phelan and family. In respect your Committee donated to the Club the R. J. Phelan Memorial Cup. The balance sheet shows a credit balance of £29 15s 6d. Though slightly lower than the previous year’s balance, this is most satisfac tory when we give consideration to capital expenditure amounting to £SO in the nature of stands, trophies, concreting, etc. The membership has been well maintained. The decrease of income from subscriptions is due to the fact that the age limit for junior members was raised and that several members previously paying full subscriptions were admitted as country members.

Members generally enjoyed a pleasant year. This we attribute to the fact that full provision was made for junior members and those not interested in the various match teams. The Match Commute and the Ladder Committee are to be congratulated in receiving and sustaining interest in the series of competitions. The courts and playing equipment are in excellent order and it is anticipated that the expenditure will be decreased this year. In view of this and the Club’s strong financial position, your Committee respectfully suggest that it is necessary to review the Club’s policy of expenditure. A special motion regarding this will be placed before you this evening for discussion. Your Committee have placed an order for the supply of balls to the Club for Club use. This will he an obvious advantage to many and will permit of members benefiting from the general prosperity of the Club. Owing to the increasing membership and the limited number of courts, consideration must be given to the necessity of providing further courts to meet the requirements of members.

Various Club competitions and intferclub matches were played with the following results: — Ladies A Grade Championship— Mrs Bullard. Ladies B Grade ChampionshipMiss R. Patterson. Men’s A Grade Championship—Mr A. T. Buxton. Men’s B Grade Championship—Mr J. Baxter. Interclub matches were played with the Tauranga South, Te Puke and Rotorua. Junior interclub matches were also arranged. In conclusion your Committee expresses the hope that the coming season will be a prosperous and successful one. The balance sheet was read by the Treasurer, Mr K. Taylor, and disclosed a credti balance of £29 15s Sd. The balance of assets over liabilities was given at £2(50 lbs 6d. Mr Armitage moved —That the report and balance sheet be adopted - -Seconded by Mr Simmonds. Questions concerning various hems in the balance sheet were asked and satisfactorily answered.
